Job Description

Fabricate and install the ducts used in heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems and also metal roofing, siding and kitchen equipment. They use fabricating machines, such as power shears, power brakes, rollers and presses to cut and bend sheet metal to form these items and other products and equipment.

Work Scope

Architectural sheet metal, standing seam, roof systems, skylights, lagging, toilet partitions, lockers, heating, ventilation, air conditioning units (HVAC), testing, balancing, and service of HVAC systems.

Apprentice Information

Working Conditions

Involves a full day of strenuous physical labor in the construction environment.

Apprenticeship Training Period

Five years of on the job training.

Related Instruction and Method

Two nights per week, usually September through June. Four hours per night (5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.) Average of 156 hours per school year.

Qualifications

Must be 17 years old and have a high school diploma or GED, passing grade in Algebra, math or H.S. Regents Math. A transcript is required. Must have a valid New York State driver's license and be a resident of jurisdiction for at least one year prior to the application date in Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans or Wyoming counties.

Probationary Period

None.

Tools

Cost varies. Apprentices must purchase their own hand tools.

Current Journeyman Rate

$30.00 per hour.

Estimated Annual Earning

Estimate of $45,000based upon 1,500 work hours per year.
* Estimates are based upon average hours worked, which may vary from year to year.

Health care, pension fund, annuity fund, and vacation benefits. Benefit eligibility is based on the rules and requirements of each specific fund.

Union Dues

Initiation fee $500 based on Journeyman rate.
Membership dues - $33.
Working dues - $1.53 per hour.
