Job Description

Apply coats of plaster to interior walls, ceilings and portions of buildings to produce finished surfaces that are fire-resistant and soundproof. They also mix plaster to a desired consistency and spread the plaster over drywall or masonry base using a trowel.

Apprentice Information

Working Conditions

Standing for prolonged periods. Climbing and balancing on ladders and scaffolds. Lifting up to 50 pounds. Exposure to outside weather conditions during some seasons.

Apprenticeship Training Period

6,000 hours. Average annual hours 1,600-1,800.

Related Instruction and Method

144 hours per year.

Qualifications

Must be 18 years old, must have completed the ninth grade, must take the New York State General Aptitude Test, must have a signed affidavit attesting to the physical ability to work as a plasterer and be able to walk at heights above 25 feet and lift up to 70 pounds.

Probationary Period

Three months.

Tools

Apprentice must purchase $250 worth of tools.

Current Journeyman Rate

$35.09 per hour.

Apprentice Wage Progression Schedule

1st 1,000 hours - $10.30
2nd 1,000 hours - $12.30
3rd 1,000 hours - $14.30
4th 1,000 hours - $16.30
5th 800 hours - $18.30
6th 600 hours - $20.30

Estimated Annual Earning

$48,000 *
* Estimates are based upon average hours worked, which may vary from year to year.

Fringe Benefits

Health and Welfare, Pensions and Annuity, Vacation, College. Health and Welfare Benefits begin at $16.30 rate of pay.

Union Dues

$75 initiation fee, $30 per month union dues.
